Backsplash 101

Monday, 07 February 2011 23:14

If you are looking to add an extra touch to your kitchen with one simple change, consider adding a personalized backsplash.  There are unlimited, choices in color, sizes and material.

The purpose of a backsplash is not solely based on aesthetics, it is practical as well.  It protects your kitchen walls from oil and grease, it creates a splatter proof surface, that is easy to clean.

Top backsplash materials

Travertine mosaics: this look can both be country and modern. It all depends on the size of the tile used and the surrounding cabinetry.  Remember, stone tile needs to be sealed to protect the tile from stains and water.

Stainless steel: this tile is modern and creates a sleek look.  It is easy to maintain and you need to use warm water and a sponge for clean up, and a soft towel to for buffing.  There is one small point to watch for with stainless steel, that acidic liquids can discolour this material.

Glass tile: this material, adds glitter to a boring kitchen.  It is contemporary and sleek.  The reflective surface is easy to clean and adds visual interest.

Decorative metal panels: this material can be used in all styles of cabinetry. You can find geometric patterns, to extremely ornate.  The metal backsplashes are heat resistant and can be cleaned easily.

Marble: a timeless material, that can be applied to any style of kitchen.  However, marble is very prone to staining and any splatters need to be wiped off immediately.

Ceramic and porcelain tile: limitless in its application.  Is to use, but is not as charming as other backsplash materials mentioned.  To add abit of flare to a boring tile create a pattern to add visual interest.
